Admittedly, Tim Patrick's voice is untrained.
In fact, he said he was afraid to sing in the shower
until 2004. That was the year he sang for the
first time in public. A pianist at a Minneapolis club
provided the motivation and support for Patrick to
sing-what else?-"Unforgettable." Well, the experience
was an unforgettable one for Patrick. He
took his new-found love of singing to heart, performing
in local theater productions and talking
about recording a CD for his unborn grandchildren.
That was the inspiration for The Shadow of
Your Smile, and Patrick's project seems more
attuned to his family's appreciation than for a
general audience, though The Shadow of Your
Smile has been released for just that market as
well. It's apparent from the introduction of the
first number, "The Way You Look Tonight," that
Patrick is working with an experienced back-up
group. Sure enough, pianist Joanne Grauer is a
veteran of accompanying celebrities like Andy
Williams, The Osmonds, and The Lennon Sisters.
So, you can imagine the level of improvisation
available on Patrick's debut CD. Though Patrick's
recording is appealing to those who enjoy pop
crooners, it appears that the album, targeted
toward his family and friends, is a document of his
new-found enjoyment in singing.
